Feldenkrais Method
We use movement to deepen awareness, and invite awareness to self-organize movements.
What does Awareness have to do with Movement?
Humans learn to filter out sensory information at a very early age. We put our babies in shoes as soon as they start to walk, which protects their tender feet and robs their brains of a neurological feast as all 26 bones of the feet and the different textures of the floor create patterns of stability and balance. We put school children in hard desks and demand that they stay put so they must learn to block out the discomfort in order to survive and thrive. We put ourselves in seats that are uncomfortable, shoes that pinch, and clothing that demands that we suck our bellies in, thrust our chests out, and pin our shoulders back so we look confident and competent. In order to cope with a demanding world, we become experts at blocking out the messages from our remarkable sensory system, until something breaks down and we can no longer continue to ignore the signs and soldier on.
Our clients become experts on themselves.... expert at detecting their own habits of sensing, feeling, and moving. At Center of Motion, clients learn how to recapture those vital sensory motor capacities that seem to have been lost along the way, and to create new postural and movement habits.
Why Feldenkrais
Feldenkrais Work That I Do
Private Sessions
I work with humans of all ages and abilities. Private sessions focus on each clients' unique structure, function, symptoms, and intentions. I listen, observe, assess and detect the patterns and habits that interfere with your choices of how you move about in the world. I create movement sequences that show you how to untangle your patterns and use your attention as momentum for change. It's relaxing, fun, fascinating and powerful.
Sessions may be in person in my Black Mountain studio or online using Zoom.
Mentoring and Consulting
Individual mentoring for Feldenkrais students, practitioners, and other somatic practitioners is a gratifying part of my practice.
If you prefer to arrange small group mentoring, please contact me, and we can make a plan.
Consultations with practitioners and their clients are also available. These are generally single sessions, helpful if you feel unsure, stuck, or uncomfortable about your ongoing work with a client. Your knowledge and experience, combined with my fresh set of eyes and decades of working with complex pain disorders, is often a potent way back to clarity and success.
Mentoring and Consulting sessions may be in person in my Black Mountain studio or online using Zoom.
